Uttarakhand AYUSH Department, for the first time, has made a big move to open naturopathy hospitals to promote wellness tourism in the hill areas of the state. Department officials have said that AYUSH hospitals will be built on a resort pattern, where customers and ailing patients will be treated as per the traditional Indian medication system without taking the help of allopathic medicines.
According to Department Secretary Dipendra Chaudhary, the state AYUSH Department has already selected land to set up two large naturopathy hospitals in Champawat and Pithoragarh districts, while the location hunt for the third one is in progress in Bageshwar district. All three will come up in the Kumaon region.

Choudhary and other officials stated that in the first phase, preparations are being made to open naturopathy hospitals in three districts with the aim of linking Ayush and wellness tourism in Uttarakhand. Department officials stated that the first two hospitals will come up at Balwa Kot in Pithoragarh and Koli Dhek of Champawat districts, as the place for the third hospital in Bageshwar is being hunted. Simultaneously, the department is preparing a formal proposal for the central government’s support to realise the goal.

The State’s desire to set up naturopathy hospitals will be fulfilled with the financial support from the central government under its National AYUSH Mission programme, claimed the state Ayush Department officials, adding that the proposal will soon be sent to the central government for further action.
“A proposal to open Naturopathy Hospitals in three districts is being prepared in the first phase. These hospitals will be established on the lines of resorts, where patients will receive natural medicine treatment along with better accommodation facilities. This will promote wellness tourism in the state,” informed Choudhary.
The Centre had started its AYUSH Gram Yojana with a target to set up one Ayush wellness village in every block of the state under its National AYUSH Mission (NAM) launched in 2014. The scheme of creating AYUSH Grams advocated for the adoption of the method and practice of the AYUSH way of living and health care in these villages. However, the Central Government has now discontinued the scheme. According to the state Ayush Department officials, the state centre now provides financial assistance for opening naturopathy hospitals in the rural areas of the state.
